GPS Events

Global Positioning Systems are a high- tech and very popular tool for navigating and decision making. The following is a standard client questionnaire that helps our clients understand the possibilities. Also visit www.can-you-find-it.com for more information.

Please give me a quick description of the program.

Teams use handheld GPS and maps to search the landscape for information they can use to reach the conclusion of the adventure.  Adventure scenarios include Mission:Possible, 'Solving the code on a locked attaché case', Smuttynose’s Secret,'‘Finding the key to the locked treasure chest', Build It, 'Finding the parts to build a 3-D model' or just win the 'Race'.  GPS units are preprogrammed to take them to specific places to find a hidden cache, find a clue, answer questions, or complete a challenge and move them closer to their goal.  This adventure has been created to fit time slots of 1 to 4 hours.

Is this an indoor or an outdoor event?

GPS units only work outside.  The challenges have been customized for islands, city parks, beaches, interesting historical locations, and in semi-wild forests.  Sometimes, participants must enter museums and unique destinations to find their answers. Weather rarely interferes as groups love the adventure and they can wear ponchos.

We can also create an event done inside with maps and without GPS.  It is a strategic challenge that is just as exciting.

Is this just for walking?

Though not meant to be physically challenging, walking is the most common method to get around.  We have used golf carts, limousines, Jeeps and kayaks.  If there is a meeting place, teams might return to switch gears and do a table top problem solving or creative activity before heading back out.

What about room/space requirements or A/V needs?

It truly depends upon what your groups wants to do.  Small groups can have their introduction outside, easily.  Large groups may need the confines of a room to give the detailed directions on operating the GPS.  It’s easy to use the GPS, but people need to be able to hear instructions.  We can modify to fit your situation.

How many people are on each team and who decides that?

It is really up to you.  8-10 is good, but we have done this with 3 and 12 person teams and for groups as large as 400.  There are good reasons to create teams based on known teammates and good reasons to not divulge the team information until the last minute with secret envelopes.  We definitely have to know all of this before the event so that we are prepared with equipment and supplies.

Should I let you know how many teams we are going to have?

Definitely.  We need to have enough supplies, maps and GPS units.

What do they win? That’s up to you.  Many groups use this as the opportunity to give away an event memento, company award or humorous award.  We have also seen trips to the Caribbean and Boston Red Sox tickets.  We have lists of different prizes that have been well received.  We also encourage a scenario where it is cooperative ending.  There doesn’t need to be a winner and all can receive a token prize.

How long is the program?

It can last anywhere from an hour to 4 hours.

Will we have fun?

Everyone else has!  We aim to please.

What do groups generally learn from this activity?  It is a great, non touchy feely team building activity.  It has been customized to fit training outcomes and CEU goals.  There are inherent leadership, communication, problem solving, strategic thinking, and decision making outcomes that can be debriefed at the end.  We have the credentials to meet any business development need.  It has been established that physical activity, combined with thinking promotes learning.  Enriched programs such as this follow the participants back to the office every time.

Or.....it is just as successful for a fun game to end up at a restaurant for dinner!

Will there be debriefing at the end of this activity?

Some groups want to just play and go on to refreshments.  It is always a good idea to regroup and spend some time talking/ and thinking about the many adventures that happened for individuals, teams and the entire group.  Every event brings with it dynamic opportunities to build relationships, discuss outcomes and learn about ourselves.

What are the primary benefits of this activity?

Fun, physical activity and communication

What are the secondary benefits of this activity?

Strategizing, time management, leadership initiative building, and group decision making are all part of reaching the goal.  It can be customized further to incorporate your organizational business goals for training and meetings.
